Description

In fair conditiion, the hospital is unoccupied and appears to be undergoing interior renovation. Built with PWA funds, its Moderne design and construction materials contribute to the cohesive appearance of the buildings on the site.

The combination of red brick and concrete, simple geometry, and classical motifs makes for a three-story building that is visually modern, yet evocative of the past. Modern elements include metal casement windows with small panes of equal size framed by limestone sills and lintels of brick laid vertically. A narrow limestone band runs along the roof line with a double band of limestone running slightly below it. Classical features include two pair of limestone pilasters with Doric capitals and entablature. A recessed entryway is adorned with a carved limestone arch reminiscent of a fanlight in a Florentine pattern that features a keystone inscribed with a modified Cross of Lorraine in red (the modified Cross of Lorraine has been the symbol for the fight against tuberculosis since 1902). A small balcony with wrought iron railing is located above the keystone and is supported by oversized stone corbels.
