Description

The Harper Building is the first building that visitors see when arriving at the site. Although in poor condition today, the Harper building is still impressive given its classic style, momumental size, and symmetry.

Constructed of red brick and limestone, the two-story Classical Revival-style building is a five-part compound plan with a large central block connected to wings by hyphens of modified design. The central block features four pairs of limestone pilasters, each with a composite capital and entablature with circular pediment design motifs. The roof cap of pediment design is repeated at the recessed entry inscribed 'HARPER'. Rectanglar metal casement windows with small glass panes are framed by limestone sills and keystones. Hyphens are differentiated from the central block and wings. They have semicircular arched window openings on the second floor in an alternating rhythm with limestone abutments and keystones. Some window openings are enclosed in a herringbone pattern. Near the top of the building a running bond cornice of red brick with diamond-shaped limestone inserts connects the wings and hyphens with the central block. Each wing features brick pilasters with limestone capitals, mixed brick and limestone entablature and parapet.
